Scholarship information for District 1 Lodges

Information for District 1 Sons of Norway Parents and Families looking for Scholarships:
Your lodge President and Secretary have been notified as to the amount of District money they have available to use. In some cases, this information is passed on to the lodge scholarship committee or chairperson. The local lodge will award both the lodge scholarship, and the District scholarships to those that apply through their lodge.
Steps towards a camper scholarship:
1. Apply to the camp of your choice. This is usually done online.
2. Once accepted, send the Sons of Norway District 1 lodge that you belong to, a copy of the acceptance email or paperwork, along with a note requesting a scholarship. Lodges may have additional requirements, so be sure to check with them. Anyone wanting a District scholarship must first receive a lodge scholarship.
3. Each lodge will award a lodge scholarship and a district scholarship to applicants, as money allows.
4. The lodge will fill out the district paperwork and send it to the District 1 Scholarship coordinator.

- The lodge President should appoint a small committee (apx. three people) which is responsible for developing lodge guidelines, distributing scholarship information, reviewing and reporting on scholarship applications.
- Local Lodge Scholarships should develop written guidelines. The guidelines should include a listing of all criteria that will be used for the scholarship candidate selection. They should also include who qualifies (ex: must be a member, child or grandchild of a current member) and the purpose of the scholarship (to attend heritage camp, college tuition, books for school, etc.)
- All Local Lodge Scholarships should be advertised to members of the lodge in the lodge newsletter. Three separate newsletters should contain the contact information, how to acquire an application and the deadline for entry date. It should also be announced at lodge meetings.
- Applicants should be notified in writing whether they receive or don’t receive a scholarship.
